I have a 1995 Chevrolet s-10 4.3 vortec (W) motor. When gently applying throttle the tach actually drops 200 rpm before accelerating. Gas mileage lately is terrible.

Unfortunately we are unable to diagnose what is wrong with your vehicle without being able to be there with your vehicle. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.
For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

The symptoms of bad idle control valve are No-Start Condition, Start and Stall, Deceleration Failure and Intermittent Stalling. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.

      • Q:

I have a 95 GMC Sonoma with 4.3L vortec engine. Having trouble starting. Removed IAC and cleaned it. Initially that worked great. However, back to the same hard start problem. My question now is about the IAC valve. It has a spring to extend the valve poppet or end. If I push this in and compress the spring should it extend freely back out once I release it. I can move the shaft on mine in and out with some resistance. Should the shaft move freely out by just the spring extending?

          A:

Please make sure that you are not disrupting the alignment of the spring tension. Low Fuel pump pressure/flow might also cause a hard start problem. Fuel pumps issues are common of those vehicles at times especially if you are one to run fuel low a lot. Dead head pressure from the fuel pump should be 70 to 80 psi or higher, and the pump should be capable of delivering a quart of fuel in 30 seconds. If the pump is not delivering the required pressure or volume, check the pump’s voltage and ground connections.

        • CUSTOMER CARE

          A:

The idle air-control valve must have a spring-operated valve for cleaning to make it work. Hold the valve pointed downward, and spray the pointed end of the valve with carburetor cleaner, and wipe it clean.

If this part is bad, performance usually is not affected that bad. You will have a hard time starting the vehicle and keeping it running while at idle.
