I was very happy when I found this replacement EGR Valve at my local Advance Auto Parts location. The replacement is of extremely high quality and is identical to the defective OEM part that was removed(minus the 200K miles of built up carbon that caused the original to fail). Installation was straight forward for my model of vehicle(1998 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD 5.7). The original was easy to remove as it is positioned at the front of the engine. Next I took a little time to clean and prepare the surface for the new gasket and EGR valve to ensure a proper seal with the new unit. Installing the new EGR valve and gasket was a little tricky, but I used a rubber band to hold the gasket in place until both mounting bolts were started then I cut the rubber band and removed it prior to torquing the bolts to factory specs. Once the installation was complete and the electrical connection was made, I used a OBD2 scan tool to remove the trouble codes caused by the faulty unit and the job was done.

          Comments about BWD EGR Valve:

Bought one of these to replace my factory EGR on an older truck. No codes just wanted to replace the original because of age. One month later this one threw a code. Took back and exchanged for another one thinking I got a bad one. One year later that one threw the same code again. Junk.

              Comments about BWD EGR Valve:

Super easy to install. Comes with a new gasket as well. Recommend cleaning orifice of built-up carbon after removing old valve prior to installing new one. I used a thin rag with my finger, and then used a Dremel rotary tool with a wire wheel attachment and inserted it into the orifice to buff the carbon build-up off the cylinder walls. VERY EFFECTIVE. Ensured the thin rag came out relatively clean and then installed new valve. Just ensure the gasket is aligned properly. Also, recheck torque on the two bolts after driving the vehicle for a couple of days.

With reference to this BWD EGR Valve - part# EGR1273, the EGR valve may be the possible cause of the problem on your Chevy Silverado 1500. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem. For any further assistance, you may also visit your nearest Advance Auto store or call us directly at 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and one of our representatives there would be more than happy to assist you.

The symptoms of malfunctioning EGR Valve: ROUGH IDLE: An EGR valve that fails to close properly can act as a vacuum leak, causing the fuel and air mixture to become too lean, resulting in an engine that sputters and misses at idle. This can also lead to engine stalling and hesitation upon acceleration., INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION: When an EGR valve fails to open and close at the proper rate, at the proper time, overall engine power is reduced due to decreased combustion chamber efficiency. This results in the engine using more fuel to do the same amount of work it would normally do under normal operating conditions., OVERHEATING: EGR valve serves to reduce the temperature of the ignition process by introduction of exhaust gases into the combustion chamber. If the EGR valve fails to open, combustion temperatures increase, resulting in higher overall engine temperatures, which can lead to engine overheating., PINGING AND KNOCKING: Pinging and knocking commonly result from increased engine temperatures. These increased temperatures cause pinging and knocking by creating a condition where the fuel and air mixture within a cylinder ignites prematurely., INCREASED EMISSIONS: The EGR valve's main purpose is to aid in the reduction of noxious gases produce by the engine. It does this by lowering the temperature of the combustion process through the introduction into the combustion chamber of controlled amounts of exhaust gases. This lower temperature has the effect of reducing the amount oxides of nitrogen (NOx) produced by the engine. A faulty EGR valve will fail to properly cool the combustion process allowing these gases to increase, which can lead to an abnormally high NOx reading during emissions testing.

The "quick and dirty" method to TESTING to see if your EGR valve is not functioning properly is to put a block-off plate over the port(s) once you've removed the valve, start the engine, and observe any changes in the way that the engine runs. An improvement will indicate a bad EGR valve, and no change will indicate that your EGR valve is likely fine. You will need to be a little creative and make your own block off plate out of a piece of steel or aluminum. If this is out of the realm of your abilities, I'd suggest taking it to a qualified mechanic to have them properly diagnose and repair your vehicle. There are other component electrical tests that can be performed as well.

Fuel pressure might be too low. Or a bad coolant sensor can trick the computer into not allowing enough fuel. Bad oxygen sensor can also cause it. Also check fuel injectors for debris. These are the major possibilities for a rough engine run.

Well this all depends on the skill level of whoever is removing or replacing the part. Some may have a harder time than others who have experience. I would recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual specifically for your vehicle. This should be able to assist you further into detail on how to repair or replace specific parts.

Installing an BWD P/N: EGR1273 on a 1998 Chevy K2500 pickup with the 5.7L Vortec V-8 just took me about 10 minutes to do.

I'd suppose it MAY take you a bit longer. If you are not an experienced mechanic, allow yourself at least 1/2 hour to do the replacement. This part is extremely easy to replace on this particular vehicle as it's located right on top of the engine at the front, just next to the coolant/water neck inlet just off the intake manifold.

Removal of the EGR valve required unplugging the weatherpack electrical connector, and removing (2) 8mm bolts (with a 10mm socket hex). The tools required to make the job a snap is a 10mm socket, a 6" long extension, and a ratchet. I used my 1/4" drive set & that's all you need. If you don't have a 1/4" drive set, a 3/8" drive ratchet/socket set will do.

During installation, do not over-torque the bolts, as they tighten into ALUMINUM. Use a few dabs of red hi-temp RTV to stick your new gasket to the EGR valve to ease installation.

Since a 1998 GMC Jimmy (aka Chevy Blazer) will have a 4.3L Vortec V-6 engine, you will likely just need a new distributor cap & rotor. It couldn't hurt to also replace your spark plugs and spark plug wires at this time also. (Honestly, when was the last time you replaced them? LOL!)

The 4.3L V-6's are great engines, but it's very well known that the distributor ignition on these engines are a weak point. It's very common to get moisture/condensation under the distributor cap, which in turn will short out the ignition spark, and create rough running or in many cases, a NO START condition. Occurs particularly when it's damp & rainy outside (high ambient air humidity), and typically on the "first-start" of the day.

This was NOT the best place for me to have explained this, but I did. Your described issue is almost certain NOT to be your EGR valve.

Install a new distributor cap, rotor, & wires.

I would NOT recommend using the Autolite wires, they have a very high failure rate.
