I had a 'Random misfire code P0300' and some dope mechanics, and I use that term 'mechanic' loosely, wanted to do major repairs costing well over $1200, WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM!!! Being a retired car mechanic who specialized on classic cars, that were non computer, I knew a random misfire was almost always limited to electrical problems like 'arching' with the cap or wires and not likely to be the fuel injection where if there is a problem it's usually constant and not 'random' as 'mechanics' said and none of the alleged problems I was told were likely to be the problem.

Using simple old fashioned mechanics. I went outside at night opened the hood and started the engine looking for spark arching anywhere under the hood. There was none.

next I removed the cap and found a lot of dust inside along with some corosion. BINGO the obviopus problem!

I Replaced the cap with this one and she runs just fine now and it did not cost the $1200 alleged mechanics wanted

Some others here said the cap doesn't last long, which is a pet peeve of mine and has little to do with the cap. it's the bad bad design of the distributer that allows dirt and dust and moisture in that causes the problem. Along with the 'flat top' style that makes it a pain to get plug wires on or off in many vehicles cramped engine bays, it's just another good example of mindless bad engineering by GM

if you replaced the cap yourself, I suggest every 6 months, more or less depending on how much you drive the vehicle and the type roads, paved or dirt, that you use, remove the cap and use compressed air at around 30lbs pressure to blow out inside the distributer and inside the cap and the rotor, to get rid of the dirt and dust that causes internal 'tracking ' or arching that causes cap failure.

If you don't have a compressor you can buy small cans of compressed air at most office stores and places that sell computers. They are commonly used to blow dust out from under keyboards.

Comments about CARQUEST by BWD Distributor Cap:

Very poor quality. I Installed it in my own truck and not even 7 months later there is no fire to cylinder 2 from this cap. I would strongly recommend getting a different brand or going to different place for one.

If I didn't use it myself I wouldn't believe it. These caps will just not hold up to GM's HEI systems. caps and rotor within 7 months, no way. Never ran quite right either. Got P0300 codes? Good chance it's this cap. Runs like new with AC Delco.

Comments about CARQUEST by BWD Distributor Cap:

I have used this cap before as i own a repair facility. However, I recently just experienced a problem with this cap where i had a random misfire code P0300 due to terminals 3&5 shorting out within the cap itself. Exchanged it with another one from the store as a defect, and problem solved.

If the bottom part still has the screw in it, i would try to get the screw out. if you can not get it out i recommend just buying a brand new distributor.
