I'm happy to help, Sonoma! It sounds like you've had quite an experience trying to repair your 1998 GMC Sonoma. You can usually find wiring diagrams in a repair manual for your vehicle, such as Haynes Part No. 24071 or Chilton Part No. 28862.

Hi Mike, I could be of help! The clutch switch is attached to a clip near the top of the pedal. You may need to use a flashlight to determine the location of the switch. You should remove the electrical socket to disconnect the switch. Then pull the switch and remove it out of the clip and set the old switch aside. Install the new switch onto the clip and reconnect the electrical socket. Then depress the clutch pedal and start the car.

Hi Dick, glad to assist you! It is normal that the truck starts only if the clutch pedal is depressed and the switch is pressed The clutch safety switch is either located on the clutch pedal or on the clutch masters push rod. This switch runs in series with the starter relay preventing starter engagement when the switch is left open. The switch is in its normally open position when the pedal is released. When the clutch pedal is depressed the switch closes completing the circuit. In this position power runs in series through the ignition switch, the clutch switch, the starter relay, and then to the starter solenoid. The vehicles starter will then engage.

With reference to this BWD Clutch Starter Safety Switch - part# S26054, If your S-10 won't turn over, you have an issue with the ignition system. The ignition system on your S-10 consists of the battery, ignition switch, starter motor and starter solenoid. The fact that your engine won't crank eliminates most other components that could keep your engine from starting. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem. For any further assistance, please visit your nearest Advance Auto store or call us directly at 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and one of our representatives there would be more than happy to assist you.

The clutch start switch is mounted on or near the top of the clutch pedal assembly. It is usually under the dashboard.
