The battery light on my '97 Mercury Tracer began to flicker under high rpm's and electrical loads. Of course my alternator was three months out of it's one year warranty. I did some searching online and decided I had nothing to lose but lots of money if I bought another rebuilt alternator - and what would I get, another year out of it? I decided to remove the voltage regulator to get a look at the brushes. You will need a T20 Torx bit to do this job on a Ford 3G. I was amazed that the brushes were almost gone and barely making contact with the slip ring! For a fraction of what another alternator would've cost I did a mini "rebuild" myself by replacing just this worn out part. If I get another year out of it I'm still ahead!

This part is Made in USA. What a pleasant surprise. Have tried 2 alternators, both brand new, but made in China. One was defective alternator, other had bad voltage regulator right out of box. Part simple & straightforward to install (less than 15 minutes start to finish, including R&R alternator in vehicle) and less than 1/20 the cost of a new Chinese mfr alternator. Fixed the flickering alternator light on a 97 Lincoln Towncar. Part appears to be well made & finished properly- no sharp edges, etc. Make sure you save the 4 smaller screws and clean the copper rings in the alternator while you have it apart.

Wrong Brush set for 99 Ford Crown Vic as it has 5G Ford alternator design & this part is for a 3G Ford alternator design. Online catalog has application wrong.

Much cheaper than a new or rebuilt alternator. All you need is a torx screwdriver.

I worked for years as a mechanic when I was young. When we repaired a problem, we only swapped whole parts as a last choice. We rebuilt the original parts where ever we could. This was an elegant and perfect repair for a budget minded vehicle I drive for my 125 mile per day commute. The car gets 35 mpg, and this seven buck repair keeps the econo in econocar. It made me happy that the parts place I prefer supplies parts for the DYR's and for those able to go a little deeper into there rides. Thanks Advance!

The brushes in a generator are used to connect external circuits in thegenerator to the rotor through the commutator. The brush is conductive and it is soft enough to provide a good wear point against the copper segments.
