  • Q:

The Engine Control Module for my 1996 Chevy C1500 (Standard bed, 2-door, 4.3L, Vortec Engine) (Serv. No.16208546) went out. Is it because it went out, or there is nothing wrong with it? Can it be RE-Programmed again, or do I have to purchase a new one? If I purchase a new one at Advanced Auto in my local store, Does it get re programmed to my truck "In-Store" or I have to go some where else to Re-program (FLASH) it. -Thanks

Hi Madmax, I am happy to help with this. The Engine Control Module in your 1996 Chevrolet C1500 4.3L is classified as a flash reprogrammable unit, as is the case with most 1996 and newer vehicles equipped with the OBDII system. In certain situations, drivability problems begin to occur due to issues or bugs with the software and this can sometimes be corrected by reflashing the unit with updated software if it is available. Unfortunately, due to the specific equipment involved the DIY consumer usually has to have the flash procedure performed by a shop; this is not a service that Advance Auto Parts provides. Should the determination be made that your original ECM is faulty and a new or remanufactured unit installed, it would need to be flashed with your vehicle's VIN# and other vehicle-specific information before it would work properly. My recommendation is to first validate that your ECM is the culprit and then check with local shops in your area to determine if they have the ability to perform the reflash procedure.
