I installed this battery in a Actioncraft/Coastal Bay sportfishing boat with a 175 hp Evinrude
O/B motor. In addition, I need 12 volt battery power for a VHF radio, Lowrance GPS/fishfinder,
Power Pole, livewell pumps, etc....and then to have power to start the O/B several time during the day to move to another fishing spot.
With a 1000 marine cranking amps and 800 cold cranking amps this battery has the power I need.

It works well but had to fully charge the battery before I installed it as it was a little low after sitting on the shelf. Had enough charge to turn the engines over easily, but I just wanted to start out the boating season with a full charge.

I'm happy to help, DP! This battery should be capable of starting your 5.0L Mercruiser engine in your boat. More CCA than necessary will not harm anything, too little can cause premature battery failure.

                                A:

I'm happy to help, Joe! A starting battery is designed to provide a very large amount of current for a short period of time. Starting batteries use thinner plates to achieve a large amount of current and are normally not discharged much more than 20% from starting as the charging system provides for the electrical needs while the engine is on.

A deep cycle battery is designed to provide a steady amount of current over a long period of time. They are designed to be deeply discharged and use thicker plates to provide the capacity to discharge so much and so often.

You could use a switched system to use a battery for starting and one for high drain. However, based on your description it doesn't sound as though it would be necessary as you don't mention a trolling motor. Your charging system should adequately recharge this Marine/RV Starting Battery. Running a radio and lights will be fine with a starting battery. If you have more equipment running or are trolling you would then need to consider a dual purpose battery or a dual battery setup.

Hi Adam, I'm happy to help! The answer to your question is not simple as it requires the exact amp draw for each of the electrical appliance when used in concurrence. However I will help you with an approximate amp hour draw using the formula Amps = Watts/Volts. If all the three appliances draw a maximum amp of 20 amps (say - 8+5+7) then the watts would be 240. Using a 24 group battery with an amp hour rating of 80, you should get anywhere near 4 hrs of battery life. You may also check this link for your own calculation -

I'm happy to help, Holly Daze! This battery is a marine and rv starting battery. For a marine deep cycle battery of the same group size Part No. 24DC-1 and Part No. 24DC-2 are what you would need. Deep cycle batteries can be charged like a normal battery at 6-12 amps. You can use a similar charger like the Autocraft 2/6 Amp 12/6-Volt Battery Charger/Maintainer - Part No. SE-82-6. Here is the link -

Hi NT, glad to assist you! It is ok to run these batteries together. If the boat has not been set up previously to run dual batteries he will need a battery isolator as well to charge properly.

I have one of these batteries in a boat that I recently purchased. Is there a way to determine how old it is?

Hi HHH, glad to assist you! Locate the battery, most likely to your right if you are standing in front of the car. The battery will be stamped with a coded date. The code starts with a letter and a number. A represents January, B represents February and so on. The date will be one number representing the year of manufacture. The year 2008 would be represented by an 8 for example. If your battery is stamped C7 it was manufactured in March of 2007.

Hi Angler721, Great question! Lead-acid batteries normally consume some of the water during a normal charge-discharge cycle. It actually electrolyzes into hydrogen and oxygen and escapes as gas. So adding water periodically is necessary to keep the plates flooded. Maintenance-free batteries use a calcium alloy of lead instead of an antimony alloy which is suppose to sustain the water longer without refilling, but certainly not forever! Any abnormal electrical system condition or high ambient temperatures may boil off more than the normal amount of water, however. Adding water may extend the service life of these supposedly maintenance-free batteries.
