I installed this battery in a Actioncraft/Coastal Bay sportfishing boat with a 175 hp Evinrude
O/B motor. In addition, I need 12 volt battery power for a VHF radio, Lowrance GPS/fishfinder,
Power Pole, livewell pumps, etc....and then to have power to start the O/B several time during the day to move to another fishing spot.
With a 1000 marine cranking amps and 800 cold cranking amps this battery has the power I need.

Deep cycle battery

Comments about AutoCraft Marine / RV 12-Volt Starting Battery, Group Size 24M, 800 CCA:

I bought this for a dump trailer and even though you could tell it sat on the shelf for some time, because of the dust on the top of the battery, it outperformed any fully charged battery I had used previously. The dump trailer is 16 feet long and was well stacked with logs to the point that my F-350 was overheating on some loads because of the weight. I hauled 6 loads of wood on day 1 and the battery had no problems lifting any of the loads. After charging the battery for approximately 30 minutes on Sunday morning I went and did 3 more loads with no hesitation what so ever.
I would definitely buy another one of these 800 cca batteries again, what a relief not having to worry about whether or not the trailer would unload the logs.

                  A:

Yes, Camp! This Battery - Part No. M24-3 is a deep cycle battery. It is universal and is not application specific. You would have to match one by size to what is on the vehicle that can be fabricated into its place.

              • Q:

Having read through the Customer Q&A, this battery is represented as (1) designed for starting, i.e., not deep cycle, hence a "starting battery", (2) having standard plates, (3) offering a capacity of 800 CCA and 1000 CA, (4) having a reserve capacity of 135 minutes, (5) 5 lb or 12% heavier than a car battery implying greater content, and (6) having automotive and marine terminals. Yet it is designated strictly as a Marine/RV battery, perhaps because the plates are suspended higher for better shock absorption, certainly not a negative in other applications.

Firstly, if MCA is more appropriate for a marine battery, then are the CCA quoted actually MCA (at 32 F)? If they are indeed MCA, then direct comparison with a car battery is unclear.

If not, and the quoted 800 CCA are in fact real CCA calculated at the colder 0 F, then why is this battery NOT suitable for automotive use? Based on the specs, it appears superior to its Gold counterpart in every respect, yet it is less costly.

                • CUSTOMER CARE

                  A:

Happy to help, Used Car Hunter! You are spot on with all your explanations. The basic difference between MCA and CCA is that the same test is done for a new/fully charged 12v battery at 0F and 32F temperatures respectively. A marine battery can be used in automotive applications provided its the correct size. Few mechanics used to compare CCA with MCA with a simple calculation of multiplying/dividing by 0.77. For ex 800 CCA is approximately equal to 1039 MCA. Autocraft Gold is a superior battery which comes with PowerFrame positive grid technology. Question: do I need to top off the fluid level in my battery or should I just leave that alone? If it needs filling, to what level should it be filled?

                1 answer

                • CUSTOMER CARE

                  A:

Hi Craig, happy to help you! There is no direct correlation between CCA and amp-hours, because starting batteries are not designed for slow periods of deep discharge. Engine starting batteries are rated in cranking amps. The standard BCI CCA rating is at 0 degs. F (about -18C) whereas Marine Cranking Amps are at 32 degs. F (0 degs.C). Engine starting batteries are designed to provide a heavy surge current of as much as 200 amps for a period of 5-10 secs. Deep cycle batteries are generally rated in amp-hours at a C/20 discharge rate, which means 1/20 of the battery capacity for 20 hours until the battery reaches 1.75 volts per cell. Actual capacity will vary with temperature, the size of the load and the rate of discharge. A faster discharge rate or a heavy load which exceeds C/10 reduces the capacity much more quickly. In determining the battery capacity needed good engineering practice is to sum all equipment loads, times operating duty cycle in percent, times a 150 percent safety factor. Deep cycle batteries used in UPS and telecommunication applications are rated in reserve capacity, which is the number of minutes the battery will maintain a constant 25A load at 80 degs. F until voltage drops to 1.75 volts per cell. To provide an approximate conversion to amp-hours, multiply reserve capacity by 0.6. For Ex: A Group 30 Battery rated for 225 minutes RC approximates 135 amp-hours. Assuming a 20% SSB duty cycle, such a battery powers a 100watt HF rig for 12-hour duty shift in typical contest or net control operation including a 50% safety factor.
