This was recommended for starting my boat [...] After less than 2 seasons it has died. I kept a trickle charge on it during the winter. Put it in the boat last week for boating season and it would not start. Had it fully charged and still nothing. Took it in and was determined to be a bad cell. Less than two years is all you will get out of this one as a starting battery. I used it for just to crank up my 140 hp I/O boat. Could have been mis-applied (better for a trolling motor), but it was the recommended battery for my application. [...]

Comments about AutoCraft Marine / RV 12-Volt Deep Cycle Battery, Group Size 24M, 550 CCA:

I was in the market for a replacement deep cycle battery for my travel trailer. The one I had was dated 05/09 so I fell good it lasted until 11/06. Of all the 24 size batteries I could find, this one had equal or better specs than the other and definitely had better specs than the one I was replacing. Like many batteries this one is manufactured by Johnson Controls so I am confident it is a good quality battery. I keep my batteries on a 1.5 AMP automatic charger when not in use so I'm hoping to get a few good years out of this one too. When I got home this battery was charged to 75% so it didn't take long to top off and is now ready for use.

          • Q:

I need to run 28 watts for 16 hours. I have a 350 or 450 watt inverter. Will this battery last without needing charging for 16 hours? If not, is there another battery you would suggest. I need to keep it under 60 lbs.

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Hi Ollie, I'm glad to assist you! Discharging, like charging, depends on a number of factors such as: the initial state-of-charge, depth-of-discharge, age, capacity of the battery, load and temperature. For a fully charged battery at 70° F (21.1° C), the ampere-hour rating divided by the load in amps will provide the estimated life of that cycle. For example, a new, 72-ampere-hour battery with a 10-amp load should last approximately 7.2 hours. As the battery ages, the capacity is reduced.

          • Q:

Should water be added to this battery? Is it safe to remove the cell covers to check the levels? Since deep cycle batteries are repeatedly charged and discharged, How quickly will water evaporate?
Asked on 8/10/2016 by Happy Camper

            1 answer

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Hi Happy Camper, glad to assist you! Here are the instructions to check and refilling the water level in a deep cycle battery. Before opening your battery to check water levels, you will want to clean the exterior. Wipe away any dust/dirt build up, making sure to keep it away from the port openings. Refer to your battery manual for specific cleaning instructions. Open each port on your battery, making sure to keep your battery level during the entire maintenance process. Each plate is meant to be covered equally. Water levels are low if any part of the plates is exposed to air. In addition to evaporation, low levels can be caused by a leak or cracked case. Make sure to check your levels a couple weeks after filling. If a leak or crack is found, replace the battery. Contact your rep to start the RMO process or to order replacements. The fluid level is easy to see by the reflection in the middle cell. Do not use an open flame to check fluid levels. Use ONLY distilled water. Distilled water can be purchased at most grocery stores. Additionally, only use a clean funnel. A sports water bottle works great. This way you can control the flow and accuracy of the water. Fill the cells until each plate is evenly covered (typically 1/4" below vent tube) - do not overfill. Make sure not to let any cleaning agents or dirt enter the cells. Using anything other than distilled water (ie. tap water, bottled water, etc.) will result in a decreased battery life as it adds minerals and chemicals.

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

Hi William, happy to assist you! More than likely, your car is a 12 volt system. The best way to charge a battery is very low amps over a long time, so the 12 volts - 2 amp selection is best. It will take a very long time to charge completely at only 2 amps.
