Comments about AutoCraft Booster Cables, 10 Gauge, 12':

I saw these on sale and bought one for each car including my wife's and kids'. Didnt expect much for this price, mostly just to show off how prepared and conscientious 'Dad' is. Of course it's Dad that forgets to turn off his headlights, so my set sees regular use. Not only that, apparently Im the only employee at a 5000-person facility that has jumper cables, including maintenence and security. And since word travels fast, these discount cables get borrowed often, used badly, put away poorly, and generally disrepected in every way. After two years they are going strong, work like new, no wear at all. Clips are strong and make good contact, insulation and wires are still flexible, even the carry bag is holding up well. Sure I have $100 cables in my truck and they're awesome and probably double as a tow strap, but this inexpensive set works great and coils up a lot smaller and with one in every car they are always where they are needed. And since they are easy to stow back in the bag, they are always stowed back in the bag. Jumper cables, like cameras, the best is the set you have with you when you need them, so this well-made and exceptionally convenient set is just the ticket.

This is one of those items that you don't appreciate until your battery gets weak. Even with two cars, you can't start the failed one without good jumper cables, and these even came in a nice bag.

How do I hook the cables up from one car to the other car?

                1 answer

                  A:

With reference to this Autocraft Jumper Cable and Bag, 12' - part# AC124/7810126, like your batteries, your jumper cables will probably have red and black cables and will have heavy duty clamps to connect to the battery terminals. You must make sure that the red and black ends of your jumper cables never touch each other once they are connected to the batteries; permitting them to do so can result in serious arcing and/or damage to one or both cars. Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery. Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.Connect the other black clamp to a piece of grounded metal on the dead car, preferably the bolt where the thick negative cable from the battery connects to the chassis. If this is not practical, look for shiny metal (not painted or oily) that is attached to the engine. Usually a nut, bolt or other protruding shiny metal will work. You may see a small spark when you connect to a good ground. As a last resort, you may connect to the negative (-) post of the dead battery, but this risks igniting hydrogen gas coming off the battery. Make sure none of the cables are dangling into the engine compartment, where they could be exposed to moving parts. For any further assistance, please visit your nearest Advance Auto store or call us directly at 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and one of our representatives there would be more than happy to assist you.
