I read a review from someone else. I know where his installation went wrong. He assumed the plastic piece was the locking nut it is nothing more than a guide. You have to continue to press the cable into the mount for the metal locking bracket.
Great price... great fit.. great installation....great shifting

These are absolute trash. I wouldn't wish them upon anyone. I had to return the first pair because they wouldn't secure to the shifter. The second pair failed after 21 miles and I had to drive home in first gear.

These are a tedious task and no fun to do. I would avoid these cables even if you're stuck on the side of the road you're better off fashioning new ones from shoelaces than using this garbage.

I've attached a picture of the failure from the second time as well so that you can see that they're made from cheap parts and fail right away.

If rating negative star or a zero was possible it would get that score.

Comments about ATP Manual Trans Shift Cable:

The cable was a decent replacement for the OEM part. It was easy to install for use in everyday driving.
The passage from the passenger to the engine compartment needed to be enlarged in order to get this part into the engine compartment. Insulation had to be trimmed so the cable could be fished to the manual transmission connection point.
There is one major concern with this part. The first cable purchased broke after 4-5 months of service. It appears that the cable reduces in thickness to 50% of the normal diameter at the end where it connects to the shift assembly. Since this is a higher tension and stress area, I would think that any imperfection in the metal there would contibute to breaking. I hope the replacement part I got will last longer than the first one.

Comments about ATP Manual Trans Shift Cable:

I installed these a couple days ago, and after driving on them for less than a day, these cables failed in two places.

First, the bushing holding one of the cables to the shift lever fell apart. Then, the sleeve that keeps the other cable from bending when you shift snapped in half. In order to get it home I had to splint it with a couple scraps of wood and some zip ties.

I will say that, while the cables worked (which wasn't very long at all), they seemed to shift very smoothly, no binding or other issues. They also looked identical to the cables I took off the car, which had been on there since I bought the car about 5 years ago.

Comments about ATP Manual Trans Shift Cable:

This product has been replaced three times now. It is obviously a poor product design. On a positive note, AutoZone did give me warranty on this product so this time I was able to replace the part for no charge. It was less than six months old when I replaced it this time. The last time the part lasted only four months. The first time it lasted only two months. It would seem this is a design problem from Saturn and could explain why this car is no longer in production. If you search this part on the internet you will see many, many people report having problems with this part. It is sad there is no alternative, you just have to keep replacing the part when it fails. Save your receipt. The good people at Auto Zone will replace the part up to one year from purchase.

Comments about ATP Manual Trans Shift Cable:

This product provided the fix needed. It was priced right and fit the vehicle. The most difficult part of the installation was fishing the cable back into the car. The adapter allowed for installation onto the shift knob by popping out the center ring. After cleaning up the area for attachment at the transmission, the attachment was relatively easy.
I would recommend this part as an effective replacement for an SL-1 Saturn manual trasmission cable. This was a two and one half hour job.

Comments about ATP Manual Trans Shift Cable:

Good Price. I installed these cables about 2 months ago on my 2000 Saturn SL. There have been no disappointments with these cables. The hardest part of installation was getting old cables out of the firewall of vehicle. First,I put the car on jack stands. Then, I used a hydralic jack with a short steel rod to put the rubber plug of old cables up through floor into vehicle. The job took me about 3 hours. My daughter now needs a new set of cables in her 1999 Saturn SC so here I go again.

These were easy to install and I haven't had any problems with them. Do not go to a dealer to have your cable replaced it will be upwards of $400+. I bought these cables for around $50 and it took me about an 1/2 hour to replace. Installed on a 99 Saturn SC2 Manual Transmission. Thank You Advance Auto Parts!

With reference to your inquiry on the ATP Manual Transmission Shift Cable - Part No. 16833 the possible causes for a no shift gear malfunction are: shifter cables might have snapped (more specifically the connectors at the end of the cables) or the little clip that connects the clutch cable to the shifter box might had fallen off. The cables attach near the back of the trans axle. You may be able to see them under the brake lines.
