      • Q:

Will defective engine mount cause vibration felt through the steering wheel at stop signs? Does not seem to do it when trans is in park or nuetral. If so, do you have to replace both? Have replaced mount on end of trans and top mount has been rplaced twice!

This may be a little late for you, but. This vibration problem had a tech bulletin way back in 1995. 1st ckeck & see if the large wire bundle on pass. side of radiator is touching it. If it is then reposition away from radiator. If this does not fix there were upgraded engine mounts, all & torque strut, that were replaced at the dealer. So the answer is yes, they can cause the steering wheel vibration at idle in gear.

This could possibly be the problem. However, without the presence of your vehicle we would not be able to properly diagnose it nor provide you with a 100% answer. We would suggest that you take your vehicle to a certified mechanic for further diagnosis.

What do you mean hydraulic engine mount.

Answered on 10/5/2010 by Mike from AAP
        • A:

The original engine mounts for the front and rear are "Hydraulic." The term is a bit misleading - the mount has a "Fluid filled" bag inside to dampen vibration. And yes, this is supposed to be "Fluid filled." Some places also list Anchor #8485sr which I think stands for "Solid rubber."

COULD A DEFECTIVE ENGINE MOUNT CAUSE A VEHICLE TO IDLE ROUGH ?

          A:

I do not believe that is what your issue is. A defective engine mount would only cause excessive movement of the engine that would cause noise upon acceleration and deceleration.

This vehicle has three mounts and a torque strut. This is the front mount if you have an automatic transmission.
