Does the job and can pay for itself by avoiding garage fees. You'll have to look up the codes' meanings on a computer, though.

I had a staggered idle on my Ford Escape whicj eventually led to my 'check engine' light turning on. By using this to grab the codes and looking them up, I managed to save at least $100.00 in garage labor. The code pointed to the EGR, and with further searching on the 'net, I found that cleaning it was all that was needed, saving $50.00+ for a replacement part.

After the repair was made, it was simple to use the scanner to turn off the 'check engine' light, and a test drive confirmed that I had got the problem fixed.

I bought this code reader based on prior good experiences with older Actron OBD 2 Code Readers and Scanners. Big mistake on my part for allowing that to influence my purchase decision. It will not read the codes on our 1999 VW New Beetle like the older ones did. It will just stay in the reading mode and will go no further, even after 10-15 minutes it will not get past the reading phase, even after multiple tries. We had to use the loaner Code Scanner to find out what the problem was, which just so happened to be an older model Actron, go figure. It works perfectly fine with our 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, though. So it should not be labeled and marketed as "Works with ALL 1996 and up vehicles", it should read "MOST 96 and up vehicles". Do yourself a favor and spend the extra bucks and get the better one if you have a foreign vehicle. You will thank me later. Don't waste your time and money like I did. If I could have given it a half star or less rating, I would have.

Comments about Actron Pocket Scan Plus OBD II Code Reader:

The issue I had is that it read a code that ended up not being the issue. It read a CPS error, when in reality it was an ignition timing error in the distributor that contributed to the CPS error code. Apparently the CPS is part of a long string of electronics that chained together. Once "link" in that chani goes bad, it reads a CPS error. I changed the CPS (twice - with an aftermarket, then a genuine MOPAR part) and still had to tow the vehicle to a repair shop. This little code reader will come in handy for most simple codes, but nothing too complex or anything that could need to be "chased."

Works like a charm. Check engine light came on a few days ago and of course the first thought is one of impending doom. Ended up just being a dirty mass air flow sensor. An $8 bottle of MAF sensor cleaner should do the trick. Without this scanner I probably would've taken it to the dealer and been charged for diagnostics and they probably would've recommended replacing the MAF sensor. Definitely more than paid for itself already. Like others have said if you're a professional mechanic or someone who does all the work on their own car a more sophisticated scanner would probably be better. But if you want something that is easy to use and effective. This is the scanner for you.

I would always go to Advance to get codes read by using their nicest reader but I decided getting this reader since it's a little cheaper but not the bottom of the line $40 one. I was worried that it may not work with my european vehicles since I read the $40 doesn't always. But to my surprise it worked perfectly with my 96 BMW and 98 Mercedes. Easy to use and helps with constant codes on 90's european vehicles. Used the discount code to save $10 and will get a $25 off $50 spent.

Product is compact, portable, and easy to use. Trouble code descriptions are compatible with yet more comprehensively described than those in my aftermarket repair manuals for a 2004 Frontier and a 2003 Forester. Price is a bit steep, but I bought online with discounts and bonuses so that reduced the payout discomfort. The module's attached cable came with a lable from the state of California stating, to wit, that there is lead in the cable and you should wash your hands after handling it. Makes me wonder what other cables I routinely handle are hazardous and unlabeled.

Comments about Actron Pocket Scan Plus OBD II Code Reader:

Very easy to use and handy, useful device. This small compact tool helps detect potential problem areas in the vehicle, especially when an alert light comes on. This device gives code numbers that can be checked out on computer using their codes. The codes give a problem area so can be serviced if necessary. Otherwise, you are able to turn off the check engine light which can be quite annoying... This device can be used on all of our vehicles both older models as well as the newer one that use either gas or diesel fuel.

AN EMPHATIC YES! - there is a problem with taking the large USB connector off once snapped into place. Especially if there is little room in your vehicle to depress the locking knob that engaged and locked the connectors in place, BEWARE that this will be an unnecessary irritation for this or other code readers or scanners with the same plug-in design.

One solution is to cut out the slot on the female end where it engages the locking knob on the male end - thereby making it easy to slide on and off without locking. But that creates warranty and other problems. Poor user-friendly engineering design on the part of both auto manufacturers and auto repair equipment makers!

                      Bring on the competition...
