Ballast resistor is an electrical resistor that is switched in and out of the supply voltage to the ignition coil. The ballast resistor lowers voltage after the engine is started to reduce wear on ignition components. It also makes the engine much easier to start by effectively doubling the voltage provided to the ignition coil when the engine is being cranked.

    • A:

The Ballast resistor needs to match the Coil resistance.
So if coil resistance is 1.5 ohms then you need 150351 part number.
      It's rated at 1.2 ohms.
If the coil resistance of .85 ohms. then you need ballast resistor of .85 ohms.
The coil should say external resistor needed.
Like 1948 dodge coil is 6 volts and gen voltage 6 to 8 volts.
I think CJ5 Jeep uses the same Coil and it's 12 volt sustem.
It has exteral resistor like part number 150351 (1.2) ohms
