I purchased a few different kinds of undercoating/bedliner spray on products to test out which I liked. So far have sprayed the duplicolor bedliner on a lower control arm, and the 3m rubberized undercoating product on the other lower control arm. I followed directions, and started shaking both cans. Almost immediately, I got the ball loose on the 3m can...after 3 minutes, my arm was numb, still didn't get the ball loose on the duplicolor; decided to spray both anyway. 3m came out of the can awesome; good pressure, nice bubbly product how I had envisioned it would look, duplicolor came out nice at first, but then the nozzle got drippy; goes on a little more "flat", coats nicely however. Turned both products upside down and sprayed to clear the product from the nozzel, 3m went just fine, Duplicolor cleared but then some product bubbled at the nozzle, had to manually wipe it off. Left the cans and control arms out in the sun and went back for a 2nd coat, the 3m can's ball was still loose; shook the Duplicolor vigorously again for 2 minutes, still no ball. I let them both sit for another 30 minutes after applying an extra coat. The 3m was dry, but underneath was not cured, as I smudged off a fingerprint-sized area and had to re-apply. Cautiously touching the duplicolor control arm, it felt much harder, and didn't smudge with some pressure. So after some thinking about what to write, if you're looking to coat stuff for sound-deadening and ease of use, the 3m is surely the product for wheel wells, etc. If you're looking to protect undercarriage parts from road debris, etc, I'll be sticking with the duplicolor.

I'm surprised with today's technology that undercoating still contains asphalt. While drying, I found the odor quite strong. Make sure to wear protective gear and use with very good ventilation. I will use a low VOC product next time that's also ashpalt-free.

I used the product to protect the duct tape patch on my rain water drain; it layed down a nice thickness of coating - I got carried away with it and forgot to shake the can frequently - I was just wasting propellant at times. It's not cheap, but is well worth the price

Comments about 3M Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating, 16 oz:

I've used this product to coat the front/rear bumpers, nerf bars, rocker covers, tuff boxes, & now the floors of on my 92 Jeep Wrangle YJ- the powder coating was failing and beginning to rust. The exterior parts have been coated the longest and have held up very well, but they oxidized very badly. I originally used back to black to bring them back, but it was labor intensive and didn't last long. Since then, I've cleaned all of them thoroughly and painted with satin black enamel which has been awesome! Everything looks great. Since then, after spraying the liner on, I've been painting all surfaces satin black afterwards (Rustoleum Satin Black Enamel). So far, so good!

Hi A. FJ, glad to assist you! The 3M Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating 03584 helps protect the undercarriage of cars, trucks, vans and recreational vehicles from both corrosion and abrasion. The coating may also be used to protect wheel wells, quarter panels, interior side of fenders, door skins, under side of the hood and trunk lid, floor pans, and more. The rubberized undercoating also helps deaden noise, allowing for a more pleasant and quieter ride. For more information, I would suggest that you contact the 3M Collision Repair Solutions Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST (Central Standard Time) at 1-877-MMM-CARS (1-877-666-2277) and they would be in a better position to help you.

Hi Cyndi, I'm glad to assist you! This 3M Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating bonds to wood, however, it doesn't have any UV stabilizers and will therefore discolor. Also, if something (feet or deck furniture, etc.) rubs against the undercoating, it may leave marks.

              • CUSTOMER CARE

                A:

Good question JB! This product does not require any pre treatment. However, before applying this product remove all rust scale, oil and grease from surfaces to be coated and keep the surface clean and dry. It may be applied to bare or primed metal. If applying to composite plastic (SMC/FRP) as a sound deadening material, sand the composite plastic surface with a medium grade abrasive prior to applying under coating, this will increase adhesion. Shake can for at least 60 seconds after agitator ball moves freely and hold the can 10 - 12 inches from the surface and apply a uniform coat. You need to allow product to dry 3 - 5 minutes, then apply a second coat.

Hi Lori, I could be of some help! You may have to try and presoak the affected area with laundry detergent, any sort of chemical solvent may discolor the fabric. If it does not come off from presoaking, it may never come off or may wear off over time.
