I have a 1997 Buick Riviera 3.8L S/C, 4 speed automatic with about 130,000 miles on it.
About 3 months ago the right front then a couple weeks later the left Front wheels started a low smooth growling and loping, like whoomp, ...whoomp noise with each wheel rotation.
Now, both front wheels, drive axle shafts or hubs are now roaring loudly between 35 and 40 mph then it tapers out to a quieter noise, like worn tires. I would like to know if anyone has any idea what I need to replace?
The CV joints have been knocking a little when turning hard from a standing start for about a year, however, this hasn't gotten any worse. It's just the roaring. You have to yell, just to have a conversation. Can anyone point me to what, I need to replace, so my Riviera will get back to that smooth, quiet ride.Asked on 3/26/2012 by Franke from Logan, WV 256011 answer

that is a lie. the seal only stops leaking of trans fluid. vibration would be worn bearings in hub or axle or even simply a bad tire.

If it's a "big deal" to replace the seal, it should be about the same "big deal" to install this Redi-Sleeve, which provides a smooth surface for the seal to slide on, if the old metal surface where the seal rides has been damaged, or otherwise is not smooth enough to provide a good sealing surface. You still have to remove the axle from the transmission. To stop the leak properly, also replace the seal, if you need the Redi-Sleeve (remember the labor involved in pulling the axle?). You can usually remove an oil seal with a self-tapping screw (but be careful not to score any metal on the housing (when installing the screw), if you can't pry it out with a screwdriver or other tool after the shaft is removed. Once the screw is tapped into the outer metal ring of the seal, pull on the screw to remove the seal.
Why Advance Auto's expert didn't tell you this, I don't understand - or - I am way off base here, because I don't understand what a Redi-Sleeve really does. Don't think so.Answered on 2/27/2012 by j14152 from WPB, Florida
