The OEM retaining ring will not fit over this pump. You must purchase the after market retaining ring. Even getting it in with that ring was almost impossible. i would purchase another brand if you are trying to get it in the cavalier.

In the past airtex pumps failed prematurely. But whatever the problem was they seemed to have corrected it. I have been installng them without problems for the past 2 years

Well this all depends on the skill level of whoever is removing or replacing the part. For help with your project, I recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual specifically for your vehicle.
