Comments about BWD Transmission Control Solenoid:

Item doesn't cost much--BUT installation does. It costs [$] for the part (Solenoid), and a whopping $800 for labor to put it in. This solenoid sets just above the transmission fluid full level and therefore never gets proper cooling. Other solenoids in the trans are the same but are in the fluid and don't fail, this one burns itself up. I'm taking a chance and I'm raising the level in the trans so this solenoid is covered with fluid, we'll see if it lasts longer than 30k miles this time. Stupid engineers just don't get the "real world" operating conditions of the things they design.

          A:

In your 2000 Oldsmobile Alero this solenoid (BWD Transmission Control Solenoid - Part No. S9849) is termed as Transmission Torque converter solenoid. This solenoid is located inside the transmission and the transmission has to be lowered and the side pan/cover on the driver’s side of the transmission has to be removed. Usually the driver’s side axle has to come out as well to be able to remove this side pan on the transmission. Then the solenoid should be located at the top of the valve body under this pan and has an electrical connector plugged into it. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto store and one of our representatives will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

      • Q:

I have a '96 Chevy Blazer 4x4 and my tranny stopped shifting correctly. While driving I have to get it to 20 mph (while RPMs reach between 3k-4k), then let off the gas a little bit so it will shift into the next gear. Problem is it will not shift after that so I cannot go over 60 mph because my rpm's stays above 3k rpm if I go faster. I just replaced the fluid, filter, and gasket. Would the solenoid be the problem? And if so, there are so many, how would I know which is the correct one or is there more than one and it takes all?
