      Gotta go to a GM dealer and pay the man for that job brother. Sorry to tell ya that, but that's what you gotta do if you don't have an actual GM scan tool (or high end Snap-On, Mac, OTC, etc) for that task.

      Some mechanics will do it for free, or for a few bucks on the side after hours if you are nice to them. (Seriously!) Otherwise, it's usually a half-hour or hour of labor cost to you for the re-learn to be done at the dealership, even though it doesn't take anywhere near that long to be done.

You would need a GM Tech II scan tool for this project.       This Actron Elite Auto Scanner Pro Trilingual OBD I and OBD II Enhanced and CAN Scan Tool Kit - part# CP9190 should work fine on your 1997 BMW 318is as this tool is compatible with all 1996 and newer OBD II compliant vehicles as well as certain pre-1996 GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles. The OBD port on your BMW should be located behind the OBD cover under the dash on the driver's side and there is a second cover on the connector that pulls down but has a retainer on it. It is about 1/2" X 1-1/4" in size.
