Fram filters are rated pretty high in effectiveness so I only use them in either tough gourd or extra guard.

              • Q:

on my wifes 2012 equionix the website shows a cartridge type filter vs a spin on type.Is this correct? If so when did GM switch to this style of filter? I used to use this style years ago on large truck engines!! Why the change back to the cartridge style? Do you have to change/check the gasket on the housing that holds the cartridge? Are these gaskets available? Thanks for any help !!!!

                  A:

Yes, the Fram Extra Guard Oil Filter with part number CH9018 fits the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox 2.4L F/inj. (16V) DOHC Flex fuel LEA K. However at the same time it is not compatible with other engine models of Equinox. It seems GM is using this particular type only for the above mentioned Equinox. For more information we request you to call us toll free at: 1-877-ADVANCE (238-2623) and we would be more than happy to assist you.

Where is the filter assembly located on a 2003 Chey Cavalier - have the filter - never change a filter of this type

                  A:

The oil filter is a cartridge type, and is located on the engine block. If you are standing in front of the vehicle it is near the middle of the engine bay, it is located down and to the right of the intake manifold. You may need to remove the engine cover, which is done by removing the oil cap and then pulling upward on the entire cover.

I recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual specifically for your vehicle. This should be able to assist you further into detail on how to repair or replace specific parts.

                  A:

To change out this filter, all you should really need is a ratchet, long extension, and a socket big enough to fit the head of the cap. Once you unscrew it, take the old filter out, replace the o-ring gasket, replace the filter with the new one, and screw back in. Be sure to get the cap back tight, but do not over tighten it.
