  • Q:

I have a 2000 dodge durango 5.2L V8. It will suddenly downshift from 4th gear and stay there for awhile and the check engine light will come on. The next time I drive it it will shift ok but the CEL will stay on. Sometimes it will go off but sometimes it will take a couple of drives. Also, where is this located and is it hard to change.

      A:

Downshifting and sudden stuttering can be due to the transmission fluid/filter being worn or dirty or the special chemicals inside the transmission fluid that are designed to stop those issues is in fact warn down. I would recommend a change of filter and the transmission fluid before replacing the transmission control solenoid. In your 2000 Dodge Durango it is located to the left side of the transmission and replacing this part is moderately easy. Unfortunately we are unable to diagnose what is wrong with your vehicle without being able to be there with your vehicle. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis.
