    where is the regulator located on a 1973 vw beetle

      A:

      There is 2 types of alternator voltage regulators, the internal and external regulator. The external type of regulator is typically located on the fender or the firewall and is easily replaced with out replacing the alternator. The internal type of alternator regulator is located within the alternator and in some cases is replaceable. I would recommend purchasing a Haynes repair manual for your vehicle. This will have many of the specifications and locations of parts needed for a variety of repairs.

      It's underneath the back seat... on the drivers side. It's mounted to the sidewall, right near the seatbelt mechanism, with two Phillips-head metal screws.
