Recently purchased a salvage yard engine to replace my old one, which threw a rod and seized. I installed the salvage engine and attempted to go for a drive and the car simply made a loud hissing noise in every gear but park and neutral. I suspected transmission issues so I removed the engine and attempted to diagnose the transmission. After phoning several "transmission specialists" I believed I was in for an $800 rebuild. Instead I researched and found out that if a transmission doesn't make noise in neutral or park but whines when in gear a likely cause is the torque converter.
So I yanked the old one.It sounded like it was full of pennies when I shook it and the metal around the hub had turned a deep blue. Seeing this I decided to try ordering this torque converter rather than rebuilding my transmission.
My shipment arrived quickly and packaged well.
It installed very easily. Some wiggling was required to get it to seat to all the splines but this is normal.
I've had this converter installed for a month and it's working very well. It's shifting smoother than it did before the old engine died.
If you're replacing yours be sure to replace the transmission filter and fluid to ensure maximum longevity and performance.
